Rateable Property in Wellington. Increased Population

Wellington, Yesterday afternoon.

Last Night. According to tbe report of Mr Ames, City Valuator, which is not yet published, there are 4,490 rateable properties in the city,.being an increase of 354 over last year, 3,334 of these are dwellings. The number of dwellings in the city last year was 2,913, or an increase of 421. There are 298 stores, brewaries. offioes, and other mercantile premises, against 237 . last year. Government buildings,." churohes, schools, police barracks, asylum.^ gaol, and college are not included. * He. estimates the population at 20,000, or six persons to each house, which he considers not a high average, as be frequently found as many as three families occupying cottages of four aud five rooms, in consequence of high rents.
