CREATION AND EVOLUTION.
. 9 — After evening service on Sunday night in St. John's, the Rev. li,, Robertshawe delivered a lecture to an appreciative audience on the above. The rev. gentleman prefaced his subject by saying th.at he did not count the cost when he determined on delivering the course of lectures on Sunday evening. There was no lack of subject. On the contrary, the size of the subject was the chief difficulty. He had to condense so much into the compass of an hour and yet avoid a mere bald statement of facts. The first division of the lecture was an account, put into narrative style, of the geological record of life. He traced and described the fauna' and flora of the earth from the Zoic era up to the present time, and described the monsters tfeat fought an 4 lived on the earth when it was young. In the second division the lecturer spoke a few woids on Evolution and Darwinism, making this distinction, that while Darwinism considered that chance variation, natural selection, and survival of the fittest accounted for all that had been, by Evolution he meant that life had been guided along lines -by the, will of God, How-
ever, until the mjssing links were found neither Darwinism nor Evolution could rank as a theory, since they first supposed the existence of links of which we have no evidence and then formulated a theory. to account for these suppositions facts. The lecturer maintained these two propositions were true : — That the Bible account agrees in a wonderful way. with the evidence from . geological records, and that the cosmogony of any other nation does not. The question for a freethinker to answer was : Whence did this small hill tribe, barbarous compared with Egypt or Assyria, obtain this account unless by divine agency. The singing of ther Doxologjr and the saying of the Benediction brought the meeting to a close.
