Karl Elmar, the popular Austrian poet and dramatist, whose death has just been announced from Vienna, was known in private life as Karl Swiedack. How he obtained his pseudonym of Elmar is an amusing story, In early life he was a private soldier in the 2nd Artillery Regiment, and contributed an amusing sketch of "Life in a Bombadier Corps" to a Viennese annual, which he .signed " Elmar." The editor- thought proper to* place his real name in brackets after this signature. Two days after the, appearance of tjie magazine Private Swiedack was summoned to the presence of the captain of his company.
