THE LADIES ABE GROWING.
*- -_ i Those who consider that woman is degenerating may be interested to know that in a physical sense, the Englishwoman at least is growing both bigger and better— that id to say more healthy. A celebrated English dressmaker, -whose mother and herself have kept a register of measures for upwards 40 years, declares that women average between one and two inches taller and are three or four inohes larger round the waist than their mothers' were, and are infinitely healthier, ln 1856-57 the average waist measure was only 21 inches and most of the young women were under 20 or 22 years old will average waists of 23 inches at least, and if they are 5 feet 7 or 8 inches tall they will have 25 or 26 inch wtSsts. This is eminently consolatory. The only drawback is that when a young fellow desires to encircle some fair . maid's waist he has to use two arms instead of one. But this may be endured. _________________
