DALMATIAN'S INJURY

CONSTABLE BEFORE COURT (0.C.) WHANGAREI, this day. In the Kaitaia Magistrate's Court this morning, Constable H. H. Barrett, of Mangonui, was charged, before two justices of the peace, with the attempted murder of a Dalmatian, Mate Soko Urlicn, at Lake Ohia, on Monday. Barrett, for whom Mr. J. B. Reynolds, of Kaitaia, appeared, was remanded in custody to appear at Kaitaia on Friday. Urlich, a single man, is a gumdigger, and is stated to have received his injuries some distance from the shack which he occupies about one mile and a half from the main Kai-taia-Mangonui Road. The incident is alleged to have occurred late on Monday afternoon, and the injured man was brought to the Mangonui district hospital by friends. He was in a sinking condition, and immediately after his admission at 6 p.m. an operation on bullet wounds was performed.

As a result of information received at Whangarei headquarters on Monday night, Inspector J. P'ox and Detective-Sergeant J. Finlay left hurriedly for Kaitaia and, following upon their investigations, Constable Barrett was arrested yesterday. Barrett, who is a married man, has been stationed at Mangonui for four years. Last week he received notice of transfer to Waiuku.

The conGition of Urlich remains very serious. His deposition was taken at Kaitaia Hospital last night.
