MASTERS CAREER.
POPULAR OFFICER. CAPTAIN UPTON'S RECORD. Captain H. L. Upton. D.S.C.. R.D.. A.D.C.. R.N.H., who was in command of the Kangitane. is one of the best-known and inont popular officers serving on the New Zealand Shipping Company's line, and is the possessor of a lengthy and distinguished career.
Joining the company as an apprentice from the training ship Worcester in 1002, Captain Upton has tsince c-erved on most of the company's vessels and commanded several. Captain Upton was a senior ranking captain in the Royal Xaval Reserve and was also an aide-de-camp to the King. Serving with the Xavy during the Great War. he wais for sonic time in command of minesweepers and was engaged in this work off the French coast for some month* after the conclusion of hostilities. For his services during this period he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. A married man. Captain Upton's home was in Hovo, a suburb of Brighton. Kngland. He has one son who, before the war, was following in his father's footsteps as a junior officer in the company.
