THE APES OF GIBRALTAR.
"When tlie apw leave the Rock of Gibraltar the English will leave also," say» an ancient Spanish prophecy which ig being widely recalled now. The apes are a tribe of Bafbary monkeys, which have inhabited Gibraltar for centuries. Long ago they were the sworn enemies of the British soldiers working on the Rock and made a habit of showering stones down on tihem. But nowadays tilings are different, and by order of the Government a soldier leaves food to the value of threepence per ape per day in i a lonely spot. Once hundreds «rfcrong,' the apes (says the "Liverpool Post") are now believed to number about a score, and so far have not shown the slightest inclination to lea-ve the Rock. = I
