STRATEGIC HIGHWAY.

TAIHAFE-NAPIER PROPOSAL. NAPIER, Saturday. The strategic importance of the Taihape-Napier road in the event of an emergency wq.s stressed at a meeting of the Hawke's Bay County Council, which decided that representations be made to the War Council that as a war measure the road be put in order. Mr. E. H. Beamish said that something should be done immediately to put the road in order for the movement of troops, should the necessity arise. He did not expect a road that would last for hundreds of years, but it should be made readily usable and serviceable. At present the only means of moving troops to the Hawke's Bay district was by or road through the Manawatu Gorge. ■■ The chairman, Mr. C. C. Smith, said the Manawatu Gorge was likely to be blocked at any time, and it was essential that there should be an alternative route for the movement of troops from one coast to the other.
