CREW OVER-TRAINED.

CAMBRIDGE BY 4 LENGTHS.

FASTEST* TIME SINCE 1934.

LONDON, April 2.

The annual boat race between Cam- ■ bridge and Oxford, which was rowed on j the Thames to-day in perfect conditions, except for a alight haze, was won by Cambridge by four lengths. The time, 19.3, wae the fastest since Cambridge won five years ago. Oxford won the toss and started from the Middlesex side, owing to the likelihood of jobbly water being experienced. Cambridge started better than Oxford, whose leg-worlc and steering were defective. The Oxford crew appeared to be stiff and over-trained, while Cambridge maud in a machine-like manner. The latter finished fresh, whereas the Oxford rowers were distressedCambridge, following the track racing method*! or the famous New Zealand runner J. £. Lovelock, trained easily for the contest and reserved its fullest endeavours for the actual race. Oxford, on the other hand, indulged in a very strenuous preparation. Since the firet race in 1829 Cambridge has won 48 times and Oxford 42. Oxford has won only three times since the Great War.
