WALLACE AND SCOTT

RACE FOR 1000.

PARNELL PLAYER WINS.

FAREWELL TO H. G. VIVIAN,

Although Eden could not get Middlemore out on Saturday the two points gained for the draw made it certain that A. J. Poetles and his men would retain the Auckland senior cricket championship, irrespective of the result of the game at Devonport. There Xorth Shore had to be satisfied with four points against Graf-; ton, and in consequence Eden final tally whs 39 to the suburban club's 36. V. J. Scott made a valiant effort to reach 1000 runs in club cricket for the second consecutive season, but when caught and bowled by left-hander X. S. Padkes for 77 he was 53 short of the objective. The possibility of W. M. Wallace running into four figures had not been seriously considered, as he was 228 away when he went in to bat for Parnell. having a single to his credit when stumps were pulled against University on Saturday week. In addition as he had assessed 204 against Y.M.C.A. and 176 against Eden in his two previous innings, the law of averages suggested a halt. But with a total disregard to the modesty of the statisticians this pocket Hercules of cricket carried his bat for 231, and took his aggregate for the season to 1002. These were scored at the rate of 100 runs per innings, compared with Scott's average of 157 for his 947 runs.

It was rather a strange oversight on the part of players and spectators that as H. G. Vivian slowly wended his way to the pavilion after being caught for 9 by C. K. Jackman, off L. B. Schnauer, not a clap was heard. Yet he was leaving the scene of hia many triumphs, perhaps never to play there again, as he sails for England in less than a fortnight to join Sir Julien Cahn's team. He has topped the bowling averages for the season, and is third to Scott and Wallace in the batting. • Most wickets for the season were taken by J. B. Simpson (57), two more than Vivian. Then come D. C. Cleverley 45, and C. Burke 44. After the two scoring, ..machines, the leadinc aggregates were:—V. S. Sale 698, H. T. Pearson 694, and Vivian 622. Moat three-figured innings during -the club season went to the credit of Wallace, Scott and Sale—four. Pearson and G. L. Weir were next with three, yet the latter's aggregate was only 426. Juet as Pearson's 109 enabled his side to share the points with the champion XI. on Saturday, so did a patient innings of -M by that fine all-rounder, A,. E. Wilkinson, clinch victory for Y.M.C.A. over Porisonby-Balmoral. He is one of the numerous ambidexterous players in Auckland, for he bats right-hand and bowls left-arm.
