DEBUT IN AUSTRALIA

THE CHIPPING NORTON

MALAGIGI ALSO SUCCEEDS. EVENTS AT WARWICK FARM, •SYDNEY, April 2. Opening his Australian campaign •with an exciting victory in the Chipping Norton Plate at Warwick Farm yesterday, the New Zealand colt Defaulter completely justified the high opinions entertained of him. In addition he survived a protest arising out of a complaint of interference to Spear Chief in the straight. Defaulter's success was the more meritorious ns he hud to make his own running over the last live furlongs and was checked slightly by The Trump falling back and Spear Chief seeking a position on the rails. The last halfmile whs run at a clipping pace in 48J«. Defaulter is now certain to have all overwhelming following in the Sydney Cup. High Caste let his friends down in the Colts and (icldings' Handicap, six furlongs, when he. could only 'finish fourth to The Kaiser. High Caste had an outside barrier position, an 1, carrying 0.8, he was worried all the way by the light-weights on the inside. The New Zealander Malagigi won the Warwick Farm Autumn Cup in hollow fashion in the face of strong opposition and in time equalling the course record. The Paladin gelding is expected to ■how up well at the approaching Kand■wick meeting. Results:— CHIPPING NORTON PLATE of £050 (welglit-for-age). One inlla and a quarter. ' When Defaulter was being unsaddled after hie Chipping Norton Plate victory yesterday, blood smears appeared on the side of hie mouth, which at firet caused hie trainer, F. Roberts, some uneasiness. On examination by the veterinary surgeon, Mr. Roy Stewart, , the trouble was found to be a scratch inside the mouth, but there was no evidence of internal bleeding, thus easing the minds of betters who intend following Defaulter in future races. The "Sydney Sun" describes Defaulter's debut in Australia as that of a great three-year-old, rivalling that of Phar Lap. The same newspaper revives the defeat of Ajax by Spear Chief, by declaring that the trainer, F. Musgrave, is etill puzzled and inclines to the belief that Ajax was doped. Musgrave adds that he had been told of the existence of a gang in Sydney whose work is doping, and that the men who conveyed the information to him were no fools. He went on to say that what he could not get out of his mind wae the too quiet and sleepy appearance of Ajax before the race.
