FISHING THROUGH the WINDOW
American Girl Keen on Sport. "I'm going back to America by 'plane," said Miss Irene Purcell, who arrived in Auckland this morning in the Mariposa. "I shall fly to Singapore, and see places I have 'played* many times in Noel Coward's plays." Miss Purcell loves travelling, and she loves ships. "'Any ship gives me a .thrill," she said. "Even a little ferry bustling about gives me a' great kick. I love out-of-door life, arid have no patience with these actresses who can't get up until mid-day and want to lounge about doing nothing. If I'm tired I rest, but usually I like to get up early. I feel that there is something one gets out of the early ■ mornings that can't be I gotten any other way. "At home I own two islands. I go down there and I get away from all the silly people who think an actress wants to spend all her time acting and doing nothing else. 1 get a pair of old slacks on, and then I fish. "There is something about fishing," Miss Purcell said with a smile, "that breaks all barriers between man and man —or between man and woman. 1 think I'm keener on fishing than-any-thing else. I've been out big-game fishing when men have cursed that they had to take a woman out, and I've been the only one who wasn't sick. I could fish with the highest or the lowest in the land, and "never know that there was such a thing as class, colour or creed. From my shacks I can fish — through the windows. Throw out the lines and pull in the fish. Iβ there anything just like the thrill you pet when the line becomes taut and alive? J ask you. ..." Miss Purcell is very anxious to see New Zealand, and, of course, to try her luck with the rod and line here. From big-game to whitebait— she want* to get them all. "New Zealand is a country we hear so much about." , she said. "Wp are all keen to pet here to see your beautiful scenery. While I'm here I shall go as far north and as far south as time allows. If I find the people as kind anil nice as I found Australians. I'm sure I shall have a wonderful time."
