ELECTION PROMISES.
Your issue of the 2nd inst. records ifche following statement made by Mr. Savage, in his reply to a deputation representing retail traders, viz.. 'TVe have already exceeded everything we promised to do when we came in, and no other Government can lay claim to that." Surely this statement should not go unchallenged. There i« an element of truth, contained in the words "exceeded everything we promised to do." I think that it would b» correct to estimate that 50 per cent of the' : electors who voted for Labour had not the remotest idea that the Dominion was to be plunged into Socialism, the aim and object J being to nationalise everything under the I control and direction of the Trades Hall. This was kept carefully in the background until after the elections, and fits in nicely with Mr. Savage's statement that his Government had already exceeded everything it promised—it certainly lips. It would be interesting to have Mr. Savages answer to the following preelection pledges: The im?iedia;« removal of the revered pxchi'iife. al-n the sales tax. and ,1 definite : ronii-p that taxation would not be ircrepsed— ir<Ve:l we understood it was to bo reduced. Arain. t3>at in twelve months there would not be an unemployed man in t'»° Dominion. a!*o th«t increased wages and shorter hours would not increase the cost of M<in". At public meeting* Mr. Savage and liv Minister* do not Tir*its«<.e to tell their h'vl'i-k-- that 'he T.abou Government has faithfully earr'"d nut all or" its prc-ele-tion ided'Tcs. In Parliamentary language such statements can only be looked upon as '"'a srross misrepresentation of the facts." CIVTS.
