INCREASE IN COSTS

A los.s of £297 in the service and provisioning of boarders for the year is disclosed in the 53rd annual report of the Auckland Sailors' Home, which will lie presented by the president, the Hon. V. J. Carrington. M.L.C.. at the annual general meeting to be held on Monday, .June 13. An appeal is made for public support to assist the finances of the institution.

The accounts show an income on the general account of £2.">03 18/11, as against £2319 9/2 for the previous rear, an increase of £214 9/9. This is

accounted for by the fact that £'201 11/2 is brought into account from the Samaritan fund so generously provided li.v I lie King fJeorgc's fund for sailors. The amount received from boarders for the year amounted to £15(51, while the cost of wages end provisioning amounted to £ls.-,s. "It is obvious." the report, states, "that the low tariff dialled is largely responsible for this discrepancy. In this connection the necessary adjustments in meeting (.lie legislative requirements for increased wanes and extra leave for staff, together with the increased cost of pro\ isions, have had an appreciable effect in increasing l the cost of running the institution. A further reason is that some men, through incapacity and indigence, are accommodated at considerably less than tariff rate."

Jt was also desired to express thanks to the Minister of Internal Affairs for an allotment to the Sailors' Home of .€l5O from the profit on art unions. The attendance of inmates during the year was 10,718. almost exactly the same as in the previous year.
