POLICE MAKE 41 ARRESTS.

Another raid on a gaming scjhool where two-up was played was carried out last night by a party of detectives under Detective Sergeant F. Aplin, when 41 men were arrested in a large room in a Queen Street building.

The raiding party was divided into three- sections. Some climbed up the front verandah and the- fire escape, and entered the room after forcing a window, while others used a ladder to reach the fire escape at the back of the building and wrenched off a wire netting shield and bolted window. The other section ran up the front stairs and forced the main door.

The raid was so well timed, and was carried out so quickly, that the large number of men who were congregated around a billiard table had no time to escape. The. police seized some dice and a dice shaker, also a croupier's stiek.

Stepping on to a wallboard ceiling one man fell through to the floor below almost into the arms of a waiting detective, while another hid on the top of the lift cage until he was discovered by a detective who mustered him with ihe others. At a special sitting of the Police Court held in the police station at an early hour this morning all the men were charged and remanded on bail to appear later in the Police Court at the ordinary time. Three Men Remanded. Their second appearance was made to-day before Mr. C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., .when David Henry Simon, George Charles Adanie, and James Joyce were each charged with assisting in the conducting of the business of a common gaming house. Mr. Bryee Hart appeared for the three men, and on his application they were remanded until next Friday. Bail was renewed. Of the 38 men charged with being found in a common gaming house without lawful excuse, only seven appeared in the Police Court. Detective-Sergeant McHugh described the raid which was carried out at 8.45 j p.m. . The men found in the gaming : school were busily engaged in a game ; of two-np. I Detective-Sergeant Alpin gave evidence concerning the men who did not appear. £114 in Fines. The magistrate imposed fines totalling £114 on the 3S men, those who had a previous conviction for gaming being fined £5 and costs, and those not so convicted were fined £3 and costs. The following were fined £5 and costs William Daubney, John Stannard Goodall, Henry Simons, Ronald Cameron, Henry William Thomas Jones, James Victor Silva, Hilary Ferris Browne, Martin Nicholls, George Bernard Murphy, Robert McDonald, Carl Henry Tileman, Frank James Wilson. Charles Lowen, George McDonald, Frederick George Lavery. Samuel Shepherd, John Henry Shadbolt, John Thomas Browne, Samuel Henderson and Herbert Facoory. The following were each fined £3 arid costs: Frederick Burn, Victor Lynn Norris, Charles Eleazard, Francis Leslie Kneebone, Ulric Ralph Catton, Walter Buchanan. Charles Dickson, Anthony Nini. alias Facoory, Andrew Rcfcert Payton, James Rangi. Stewart Lowrie. Jack Rainsford, Rangi Noble, Nicholas Browne, Archibald McPherson, John Phillips, Maurice Hooper, Alexander Mcßae.
