"HOUSE FULL."
MAORIS SHUT OUT. ACCOMMODATION PROBLEM. WAIKATO HOSTEIi NEEDED. (By Telegraph. -Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, this day. That one of the greatest embarrassments of the Maori race was the apparent prejudice held by hotel and boardingliouse proprietors in Waikato towns towards giving lodging to natives was the statement made by Princess Te Puea Herangi, of Ngaruawahia, when interviewed to-day. From the standpoint of public health, she said, this attitude was deplorable, as frequently visiting Maoris were moved about from pillar to post and faced with the "house full" excuse until eventually they were forced to spend the night in the open. She says that steps should be taken to provide a Maori hostel at Hamilton, similar to those ill Auckland and Tuakau. For the construction of the Tuakau hostel Princess Te Puea herself raised £300, which was doubled by a Government subsidy. T.he Maoris were hopeful that a small section of land might be donated as a site for the building. The Princess intends to give effect to the scheme for a local hostel as soon as. the residence of King Koroki at Ngaruawahia pa is completed.
