PRIVATE EXCHANGES.
SCHEME FOR CONVERSION,
The work of converting the private telephone exchanges at Paparoa, Maungaturoto ancl Kaiwaka to Post and Telegraph Department exchanges, and the reconstruction of lines and the installation of new exchange equipment in these places, is at present in progress, and is expected to occupy several months. The main reason for the change-over was due to the fact that heavy capital expenditure faced the owners of the private exchanges in arranging to convert their equipment to metallic circuits. Under the new system the subscribers will be directly connected with the department's system throughout the Dominion, instead of working through a privately-owned switchboard as at present.
