A NEW T.B. VACCINE.
SUN BATHING AND REDUCING. DANGER TO YOUNG GIRLS. , LONDON.' A new vaccine for the treatment of tuberculosis called B.C.G. is being tested in London. It is used to immunise babies and is given in the form of capsules to be swallowed. Though it has been used only on the Continent so far, it has proved highly successful in both France and Poland. An official of tlie British National Association for the Prevention of Tuberculosis s(iid recently: "Thirty-nine thousand die from tuberculosis in England every' year, even though, as it must be remembered, the disease is not hereditary. "As far as our tests are concerned, we cannot prove them successful until the habies grow up and show that they withstand this illness. "Although the British figures have gone down generally there is a definite increase among certain types of persons. This is especially noticeable among young persons, especially girls. "One reason is undoubtedly the reducing habit. This can be very dangerous when carried :on without supervision. Sun bathing, too, under careless circumstances, has an extremely bad effect."
