WHOSE MISTAKE?

PAILMERSTON DEVIATION. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The Palmerston North railway deviation scheme, commenced and abandoned isome years ago, was referred to in the House of Representatives to-niglit by Mr. J. Hodgens (Government, Palmerston North)* in reply to an interjectio'n by Mr. W. J. Poison (National, Stratford) during discussion on the Public Works Statement. Mr. Hodgens said the work carried out had cost £230,000. Good farming lands had been taken, and a huge drain constructed, the "ditch" being nearly as wide as the Manawatu River. Its depth was 15ft. An elegant bridge had been constructed and named after the member for Kaipara (Mr. Coates), and it was known as "his mistake." The tools were sold for half their cost. The Government responsible was definitely antiLabour.
