ENGINE-DRIVERS.
AWARDS IN THE SOUTH. COURT FIXES HOURS. A general order dealing with applications for a reduction to 40 hours per week of tlie working hours fixed bythree awards and one industrial agreement relating to engine-drivers, firemen and greasers has been made by the Arbitration Court. The workers concerned are parties covered by the Wellington industrial district traction, stationary and locomotive engine-drivers', Canterbury traction and stationary en-gine-drivers, firemen, Otago and Southland engine-drivers, firemen and greasers' awards, and Kaitangata engine-drivers and firemen's industrial agreement. The parties agreed that the general considerations as set out in the judgment of the Court relating to storemen and packers were applicable to engine's drivers, that in the case of an enginedriver employed by a firm whose working hours have been fixed at 40 per week, the engine-driver would get the benefit of the reduction. Where, however, the house was one which worked longer hours than 40 per week the fortunes of the engine-driver would follow those of the house that employed him. Leave was reserved to refer to the Court any cases where special considerations might apply.
