PONSONBY RESIDENT.

MR. WALTER LAMBOURNE. One of the oldest residents of Ponsonby, Mr. Walter Lambourne, died suddenly yesterday at Arran Bay, Wailieke, in his 73rd year. Born in Auckland on the site where the Ponsonby Reservoir now stands, Mr. Lambourne had lived all his life in Auckland. He was the third son of Mr. Frederick Lambourne, of Newton, who was well known in the early days as a hardware merchant. Mr. Walter Lambourne was apprenticed for five years to Messrs. Cousins and Atkin, coaclibuilders, and remained with that firm

for 18 months as a journeyman. He then joined his father in his business in Karangahape Road, and in 1890 he decided to go into business on his own account, opening a general house furnishing business at Three Lamps, Ponsonby. For some years Mr. Lambourne was the Ponsonby postmaster when the post office was run in conjunction with his business. From these small beginnings the business has grown till it extends to practically all parts of the North Island. 111 addition to other positions, Mr. Lambourne had been interested in the Auckland Co-operative Terminating Building Society from its inception, and had been a director for over 35 years. In his early days he was a prominent member of the American Order of Oddfellows, and for many years was a keen member of the West End Bowling Club. Several years ago he was interested in cycling and yachting. 'As a church worker he was most actively associated with the Baptist Tabernacle, and was a past-secretary of the Baptist Sunday school. For many years he had been an office-bearer and trustee of the Tabernacle. In 1893 Mr. Lambourne married Miss Amlelia Dcwar, daughter of Mr. Alexander Dewar, mining expert. There are four sons, Mr. A. C. Lambourne (Ponsonby), Mr. A. S. Lambourne (Epsom) and " Mr. A. D. Lambourne (Mount Albert). The fourth son, Mr. Cyril Lambourne, died last year.
