SEAMAN DESERTS LINER. "COMPLIMENT" SAYS COUNSEL. "This man seems to think that conditions in New Zealand are so good now that he did not want to go back to the crowded Old Country," said Mr. W. Noble in the Police Court this morning, 011 behalf of Albert Robert Plaice, a seaman, aged 20, who was charged with deserting the liner Rangitane at Auckland 011 May 8 last. Plaice pleaded guilty. Mr. Noble said the ship was not delayed as the resuit of Plaice's desertion* "His action in remaining here is really a compliment to New Zealand," said counsel. Mr. Wvvern Wilson, S.M.: I suppose in return for the "compliment," the Dominion will have to entertain him. "He doesn't mind," said Sir. Noble, "ne will suffer that, as he is quite confident he will do well for himself." Remarking that it was always a serious matter for a seaman to desert his ship, the magistrate sentenced Plaice to 14 days' imprisonment.
