NEW CITY WORKS.
START MADE THIS MORNING
OVER 100 MEv\ EMPLOYED,
The work made possible by the recent sanctioning by Auckland citv ratepavers of a loan of £3r/,000 was commenced this morning, when 110 men made a start on street and drainage works. At Blockhouse Bay a gang began road impiovements and at Grey Lynn a start was made with a connecting' road to be const: ueted. between Coleridore Street and Sussex Street. Operations begun at Pailiell comprise the relaying of stormwater sewers, while in the Tamaki district a commencement was made with street improvements. As the works further develop more men will be taken on until about 300 are employed. The labour required is to be obtained through the placement officer of the Labour Department. The only exception will be in regard to tradesmen, who will be engaged through their respective unions.
