STATE OF ROADS.
BIG IMPROVEMENT TO-DAY. MAIN ROUTES NOW OPEN. A marked improvement in road communication is indicated by the Automobile Association (Auckland) reports this morning. "Although the majority of the main arterial routes are open for traffic this does not necessarily mean the roads are in good order," said Mr. R. E. Champtaloup, touring manager. "As there are many subsidences and partial slips, together with a good deal of scourng and roughness, local bodies are exerting every effort to restore all roads to normal conditions as quickly as possible. On some of the roads, flood waters remain, but in most cases these have subsided sufficiently to permit traffic." In the North Auckland peninsula access is available to Whangarei and Dargaville by means of che west coast route through Kaukapakapa and Port Albert. The Dome Valley will not be available for a'couple of days. North of Whangarei there is serious dislocation, but to-day traffic is reaching Kaitaia, via Kawakawa, Kaeo and Mangonui. The Bay 01 Plenty routes are all open. Very rough conditions prevail in the vicinity of Rotoma on the Rotorua-Wliakatane Road. The route to Gisborne is open through the Waioeka Valley and deep scourings in the crossings are causing a certain amount of discomfort. Most of the routes through the central portion of the island and 011 the west coast via Taranaki are available as far as Palmerston North, but flooding in the Foxton district necessitates the use of the Shannon Road to reach Levin. It is anticipated that a number of the roads which are still, closed will be open for traffic to-morrow. In tl * event of any further rain careful inquiry should be made about all touring routes, as they are likely to be affected again.
