ROWING IN AUSTRALIA.
N.S.W. EIGHT-OAR VICTORS. HOBART, May 6. New South Wales retained the eightoar championship of Australia and won the King's Gold Cup in the annual race on the Derwent River yesterday, winning by four lengths from Western Australia, Queensland was third and, 12 lengths away, Tasmania fourth. The Victorian and South Australian boats were swamped. The crews had to battle against a head wind, with the result that the time for the three miles was 1D.38, the slowest since 1884. After the first mile New South Wales took the lead and, though the West Australians made a bold challenge over the last mile they could not catch the title-holders. Herbert Turner had no trouble in retaining the Australian scullrnij title. He won by 20 lengths from R. Beauclmmp, Tasmania, with C. Pei'ler, of- Victoria, third. HEAD OF THE RIVER. SYDNEY, May 6. The head of the river race in Perth yesterday resulted: —Scotch College 1, Hale School 2, Christian Brothers 3. At Brisbane the head of the river race resulted:—Brisbane Grammar School 1, Soutbport 2, Brisbane State High School 3.
