LIGHTNING CHESS.
AUCKLAND CXTTB CONTEST. The Auckland Chess Club on Saturday night held a lightning tourney to inaugurate the winter season. There were more entrants for the competition than there were chess sets, and a number of members "stood down" in favour of tho visitors. Lightning tourneys are always popular, as there is an element of chance in tho play, as well as skill. Ten seconds for each move is allowed and the move must be made immediately on the call. Four rounds were played, one point being allotted for a win and half a point for a draw, and competitors with three or more points qualified for the final knockout. Twelve competitors were in the finals. They were: Dr. Short, Messrs. A. Howe, F. Bullock, J. H. Lewis, J. W. Buchan, C. P. Beltorf, E. E. Baeyertz, Oakley Browne, Andrews, Newick, H. D. Addis and Mrs. Thorpe. In the. next round Dr. Short beat Mrs. Thorpe, Baeyertz beat Howe, Browne beat Bullock, Lewis beat Andrews, Newick beat Buchan and Addis beat Beltqn. In the next Addis beat Baeyertz, Newick beat Browne and Lewis beat Short. Then Newick beat Lewis, Addis drawing the bye, and in the final Addis beat Newick.
Mrs. Short was the hostess for the evening and after supper presented the prizes to the three most eucccessful players—Messrs. Addis, Newick and Lewis.
