SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

Mrs. David Smith, who left for Wellington on Saturday, was the recipient of many parties prior to her departure. They included a luncheon given at the Station Hotel by Lady Herdman. • • * • A very pleasing function took place in the Onehunga and District R.S.A. Club rooms on Tuesday last, when Mrs. Warrington, president of the sewing guild of the club, and Mrs. Dilly, secretary, were recipients of gifts in appreciation of their services during the past year. The rooms were tastefully decorated for the occasion and during the afternoon several items were rendered, after which a dainty afternon tea was served. St. Michael's Anglican Church, Henderson, held its annual autumn flower show and sale of work in the Foresters' Hall on Saturday. The opening ceremony was performed by the vicar, the Rev. J. H. Cable, assisted by the president of the guild, Mrs. Constance Welsh. Among the articles offered for sale was an excellent display of plain and fancy sewing, provided by the guild, sweets, cakes, books, toilet requisites, and a miscellaneous assortment of useful goods. There was also a fine display or autumn flowers. The cake competition was won by Mrs. Welsh. It was announced that the church "had been doing good work during* the past year and the financial result of Saturday's function was a welcome addition to its funds. • # • • The coming-of-age of Miss Kathleen Lennox, of Sarsfield Street, Heme Bay, was celebrated on Thursday evening at a theatre party followed by supper end dancing. About 30 guests were present, Mrs. W. H. McKinney, proposing the toast of the guest of honour. Miss Lennox, wore a graceful frock of ivory angel skin lace, fitting tightly to the figure, and with puff sleeves bordered with small white flowers. Her mother, Mrs. Lennox, was in a frock of black pin-tucked georgette and lace, with a black embossed velvet coatee. Among those present were: Mesdames J. Robb, Lennox, W. H. McKinney, Parker, Kemp; Misses D. Blake, M. Free, F. Fenton, G. Eggleton, L. Hutchineon, Z. Hutchinsbn, K. Grace, O. Blake, R. Brown, M. Brown.

A very pleasant afternoon was spent on Thursday at the Ponsonby Croquet Club's pavilion, when Mrs. Horsley (president) entertained her friends and members of the club. Owing to the inclemency of the weather, a bridge afternoon was held in the pavilion, where Mrs. Horsley welcomed her guests and ' presented Mrs. Badeley (president of the Auckland Croquet Association) with a beautiful bouquet, and Mrs. Healey (secretary Ponsonby Croquet Club) with'a crystal bowl in recognition of services rendered the club during the "year. Mrs. Poster (vicepresident) presented Mrs. Horsley with a bouquet, for which she suitably responded. The pavilion was nicely decorated with flowers in the. colours of the club. The winners of bridge were Mrs. Crowe 1, Mrs. C. Hardley consolation, Mrs. Aitcheson hidden number. Among the guests were: Mesdanlss Badeley and , Keesing, president and J secretary of the Auckland Croquet Association, Finch, M(j.ud, Crowe, C. Mrs. H. J. Pearsc, of Mount Eden, entertained some friends at a bridge afternoon to wish bon voyage to Mix. E. Lingey, who is leaving for England on Saturday by the Raiigitata. The rooms were tastefully decorated in gold and mauve flowers. The hostess wore a frock of ciel blue satin and lace, and the guest of honour was in, black georgette. Among those present were: — Mesdames A. Young, L. Moran, A. Pearse (Dunedin), C. Tyer, Brookfield, R. S. Lawrence, E. Farrow, Asherton, F; A. White, T. Mullins and R. Cox.

The Loyal Franklin Lodge held a very enjoyable dance in the Kingsford Hall, Otahuhu, on Saturday evening. Mr. D. N. Rae carried out the duties of master of ceremonies and Miss Frances Wilson presented the Monte Carlo prizes, which were won by Miss K. Kelly ami Mr. R. Horan. The social committee, comprising Mesdames F. Davis and Wilson and Misses E. Searchfield, T. Kitto, F. Davis, E. Kelly and C. Leece, served a dainty supper. Among those present were: Mesdames W. Best, H. Nicholson, J. McLean. J. McCrory, J. W. Wilson, C. E. Killick, F. B. Davis and the Hisses Eileen Kelly, Flo Davis, Edna Kelly. Nancye Fearnley, Barbara Blackie, Kathleen Kelly. Frances Wilson, Lewis Grey, Ena Searchfield, Coral Leece, Beryl Olsen, T. Kitto. Gladys McLeod, J. Brown, Thelma Whitelaw and E. Fraser.
