RAGING FIRE.
CANTERBURY PLANTATIONS. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent} CHKISTCHURCH, Wednesday. Raging fire to-day swept through pinus and gum plantations of a total area of 90 acres, owned by_ the Ashburton County Council and situated on the west side of the between Windermere and Winslow, six miles from Ashburton. Thousands of trees and more than 30 cords of firewood stacked in heaps were damaged. A large number of beaters worked throughout the day, but they were powerless to save the plantations, and late in the afternoon concentrated their: efforts on preventing the spread of the fire to about 700 cords of cut timber.
