PROBATION ABUSED.
TERMS NOT COMPLIED WITH. LABOURER SENT TO PRISON. _ Because lie had abused leniency, John Edwards, aged 50, a labourer, was sentenced to* a. term of, imprisonment, by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., at the Police Court to-day. , Edwards pleaded guilty to a charge of having failed to comply with the terms and conditions of his release on probation He was further charged with the theft of £10, at Ohura, on March 18, 1929. This Mas the original charge, upon which he was placed on probation' for 12 months. The probation officer, Mr. W. J. Campbell, giving evidence, said Edwards was no use on probation. He failed to report himself and only paid £1 5/ restitution instead- of £10, and had generally abused the leniency of the Court. On March lw 1930, for a breach of his pro- , bation, he was sentenced to three I months imprisonment, while last year on a similar charge, his term of proba- ' tion was extended another six months. ! Mr. Hunt sentenced Edwards to three 3 months imprisonment on the original charge of theft and convicted and dis- 1 charged him on the other charge. c ' I
