SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The Manurewa branch of the League of Mothers held a meeting in the public hall on Thursday, when Mrs. C. S. McCallum. presided. An instructive talk was given by Mis. English on the Passion Play, which she saw in Europe. Afternoon tea was served by several members, and the afternoon closed with all members saying the Lord's Prayer. * ..* * * An enjoyable picture party was given on Tuesday evening, in order to wish bon voyage to Miss Mabel Soares, who is leaving for England on Thursday. The party adjourned later to the Civic for supper and dancing. Among those present were: Mrs. D. Maguire, and the Misses M. Soares, K. Keenan, K. Soares, V. Roads, M. Keenan, E. Soares, and P. Keenan. * • * • An afternoon Mas given yesterday by the United Croquet Club at the Domain for Mrs. Croxford, when she was presented with a beautiful handbag for her efforts on the club's behalf during the year. The president, Mrs. Powley, made the presentation. Progressive "* croquet Avas played and Mrs. Mcßride, Mrs. Bolitho and Mrs. Smith were the winners. Afternoon tea was served in the pavilion. * » « » The gardening circle of the Lyceum Club met yesterday morning at the Domain, and a pleasant hour was spent inspecting tiie winter gardens and the many other places of interest. Among those present were:—Mesdamcs Dickinson, Hammond-Hyde, deal, Jones, Hume, Macmorran, Hewlett, Becket, Brav, Nutter. Douglas, Gray, Metcalfe, Clark. Silk, Ely, Clinch, Kinncar, W. Johnston, Misses Macdonald, day, Connolly, La vers and Seideberg. * * * • The Te Atatu branch of the League o% Mothers' held a meeting in . the Methodist Church when Mrs. Illingworth presided. The Rev. C. B. Jordon, M.A., 8.D., gave an address on "The Religious Training of the Child," and emphaised the need that parents must be Christians themselves before expecting to guide their children aright, that example is better than precept and that they must know how to pray. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs. 11. R. Pijacun and Miss F. Moor. * * * »

w w w * A pleasant afternon was spent by the Mount Eden Croquet Club on its lawns, Xicholson Park, on Friday, when the members and honorary members, together with the Auckland, executive, were entertained by the president, Mrs. C. McGill. The pavilion was prettily decorated with Mowers, greenery and streamers in the club's colours. A dainty afternoon tea was enjoyed, after which Mrs. McGill was heartily thanked for her hospitality by Mrs. Oswald, on behalf of the Auckland executive, and by Mrs. Allen, vice-president, on behalf of the club. Progressive croquet was played, the following being the prize-winners: — A section. Mrs. White; hidden number, Mrs. Finch; consolation, Mrs. Butler; B section, Mrs, SherrifT; hidden number, Mrs. Morton; consolation, Mrs. Weir. » * • • A general meeting of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Federation of University Women was held on Saturday, April 18, at the residence of Dr. Horsley, who most kindly entertained the members on that evening. Various suggestions for meetings during the year were discussed, and Miss Yates proposed that circles should be formed to study the following subjects: Music, drama, literature and social and international questions. Mrs. Bevege was appointed corresponding secretary for country members, and a hospitality committee was formed, consisting of these members: Dr. dc Courcy (convener), Dr. Horsley, Dr. G. Rowley, Mrs. Mulgan and Miss Talbot. Supper was then served, and after a hearty vote of thanks to Dr. Horsley for her hospitality the meeting closed. * * * * The first At Home of the year held by the ladies' guild of St. George's Anglican Church, Papatoetoe, was attended yesterday.by a large gathering in the church hall. The decorations, which, were carried out by Misses L. Mellsop, D. Waters and J. Runciman, consisted of autumn tinted chrysanthemums and greenery. The stalls were in charge of Mesdames T. R. Smytheman and T. Richards (jumble stall), Mesdames Wyman, Burrill and Ranum (cakes and sweets), Misses Gane and Runciman (produce), Misses Kimpton and Watson (flowers). Mesdames Trimble, Wakelin, F. Burnside, Henderson, White, Misses Mellsop, D. Waters, E. and F. Trimble, R. Hounslow, L. „, and Z. Richards and Sibley were in charge of j afternoon tea. A musical programme 1 was given by Mesdames Hyland, T. H. . C. Partridge, Misses Marjorie Fair, V. Harrison, E. Thomas, Daphne Higham and Z. Richards. A social evening was held at the residence of Mrs. W. Crichton, Union Street, on Tuesday, the occasion being the departure for England of Mr. and Mrs. A. McLellan. The evening was spent in dancing, cards and musical items. Several presentations Mere made by friends who wished them a pleasant voyage and prosperity \h their future undertaking. " Mr. MeLeiinan intends entering into business in England, and leaves Wellington on Saturday by the Rangitane.

A meeting of unemployed women and girls is being held at the Y.W.C.A. on Thursday to promote a scheme of selfhelp during the time they are seeking a job. It is not just lack of money, but having nothing to do which weighs on the minds of those out of work. This scheme will provide an interest and occupation for a few hours at least in the week. It is proposed to have classes in speed practice for shorthand typistes, to have ■ instructors in handcrafts, and gradually to increase the variety' of work undertaken. Any money accruing from the sale of articles will be administered by a committee of girls and women on behalf of those in need.

A meeting of the Epsom branch, of the League of Mothers took place in the Epsom Baptist Hall on Thursday last, when the i*ev. Cruickshank, of St: Mark's Anglican Church, gave an earnest address on the "Sanctity of Marriage." He explained how marriage was a vocation, and that those entering upon this holy estate should ponder beforehand, and be sure they were making a choice for life. Mr. Cruiekshank urged that the women of to-day be patient with nerve-strained husbands, who were bearing the burden of these depressing days, and to make the home a happy resting place after business houns. Mrs. McIvinlay gave two violin solos,- and Miss Roach several vocal solos. The accompanist for the afternoon was Miss Ferguerson. Afternoon tea brought a pleasant and profitable meeting to a close.
