TRENTHAM TOPICS.

TWO-YEAR-OLD FORM AT NAPIER. THE WELLINGTON MEETING. STAR STRANGER APPROACHING HIS SEST. (By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") WELLINGTON. Monday. Goshawk was not paid up for in the Thompson Handicap, so H, Gray is at present without a mount. Aspiring has been withdrawn from the St. Leger and North Island Challenge Stakes, and Silver Paper from the Challenge Stakes. A.. E. Ellis will .ride. Mister Gamp in the Rimu High-weight at Trentham on Saturday. He will also be on Lady Pajn and'Grattus. Rorsalene has been 'purchased' by . her trainer, A. D. Webster. - Hunting Day will be ridden in the Railway Handicap at Trentham on Saturday by M. Gilmore. Red Bank ran what is probably his last race over hurdles at Napier on Saturday. He is intended for the big fences from now on. On the form of The Hawk at Dannevirke and Napier he is complimented by his acceptance in the Thompson Handicap. He was backed at "both places and was never going like a winner. Maybe he is slipping, and when old horses do slip-it is generally an avalanche;

Duo's half-brother by Cape Horn, called Outward Bound; made no showing in the two-year-old races at Napier Park, which were his first starts. He is green yet and there is plenty of time for him.

Mr. J. Landels, of Hastings, a wellknown figure in business and racing circles in Hawke's Bay, died suddenly about 6 a.m. on Saturday. Jockeys in the opening event wore a black arm band as a mark of respect to the deceased, whose sudden death was a great shock to a wide circle of friends.

H. Doyle. returned_from Sydney last week, the Tea Tray gelding Tea Time having been sold after his win at Gosford recently,.

■ The two-year-old races at Napier Park were featured by the running of several promising .sorts. The first day's winner -Rapallb is a chestnut filly by Grandcourt from Parley, by All Black from Pourparler,. a sister to Bobrikoff, and half-sister' to Teteatete. Rapallo has shown, speed in previous attempts,. so that .her win-. was not unexpected.: It marked R. Alexander's first success for Mr." ; T. H. Lowry, though, of course, the bulk of the credit must go to F. Davis for making her. Still it ig .pleasant to be able to record Alexander's early success.

Cylinder, who' ran second to Rapallo. lias fei\ to win a race, but he has- some 'good performances to his credit, including a second in-the A.R.C." Royal Stakes, and they all suggested improved forfu •in the autumn. Judging by his display last week-he is very close now to making good, to say nothing of his three-year-old prospects.

\ .The quality of the- field on the second day at Napier, when Jenny Diver won, was probably a little bit weaker than on the : first. day, but thi3 daughter of Lord Quex and Polly Peachum continues to show all the family speed. Her dam is half-sister by Feramorz to Runnymede, Raasay and Simba.

Pakitere, who ran. second to Jenny Diver,. :is a bay filly by Arausio from Te Aupaki, and thus half-sister to Toxeuma. Te Aupaki is by Merry Moment from Timua, by Birkenhead. This was the youngster's first start, so it was a decidedly encouraging performance.

Another first up performance to attract attention was the third of Love Song. :Love Song is a chestnut gelding hJ., Hunting Song* from. Mandoline (by Hymettus from Mandohij dam of Doleful Ditty), and is half-sister to The- Harp, a useful winner" formerly trained at Riccarton and "VVashdyke. Love Song -has not. been hurried, it being the inten° tion of J. H. Jefferd to try him as a stayer, and no doubt the speed he showed from the extreme outside of Saturday's field rather: disconcerted his connections. There appears a good future in store for the majority. of; these youngsters. • J. H... Jefferd was- quite prepared to see Star Stranger run well forward in the Napier, Cup, as the Martian gelding had been sprinting well on the tracks at His showing disappointed his : ;tramer,who must have been more" thkn compensated by the magnificent race he ntnvon the second aay. While 'the gallop the 'first, day must have worked, considerable improvement, there is no doubt he went infinitely better for Gray than he did for Ba«by. With, another .race in the Thompson Handicap Star Stranger will; be-. at his best again for the Trentham Gold Cup on Monday. v AM MEETING.
