SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

On Friday evening a large number of guests met at Mrs. G. E. Manson's residence, Taumarunui, to say good-bye- to Mrs. F. Howersham, who Is leaving with Mrs. - Howersham (snr.), to reside in Mangere. Mrs. J. E. Ward, on behalf of those present, presented Mrs. Howersham with a leather handbag. Competitions were won by Miss C. Corlett, Mrs. Melrose and Miss Ward. Those who contributed to the musical programme were Mrs. Bell, Mrs. Burley and.Miss Ward. An interesting talk was given to the Women's Progressive Club of the Y.W.C.A. on Thursday evening by Dr. ,Boyd, of the Health Department. Miss Bentham introduced the speaker, and the members listened attentively to a talk which gave, them a comprehensive view of matters out of their ordinary sphere. The speaker told of the benefits derived by school children since the introduction of dental clinics, and of the effects unhealthy environment and malnutrition had on the young. He also explained the steps taken to remedy these by the Health Department. The speaker was cordially thanked for his instructive talk. A coeial half-hour, followed. -.

An enjoyable bridge and gift afternoon in honour of the approaching marriage of Miss Maro Bishop, Mount Eden, was given by. Miss Winifred Cooke, Heme Bay, o'n Saturday. The guest of honour, who wore a smart frock of royal blue and black figured crepe do chine, was the recipient of varied preserves and condiments. Among those present were: Mesdames : Armstrong (Calcutta), Bethune, Bishop, Eddowes, Harrison, Le Grice, Rainger, and Misses Bishop, Coath, Eddowes, Lusk, McFarlane, Searell, Scott, , Tapper, Whitley, and Wofsfold.

On Tuesday evening a delightful surprise partv was taken'to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Boy Shepherd, Oni Tree Hill, for Miss Jean Shepherd. In the house the dividing doors were thrown open, both rooms being tastefully decorated with balloons, streamers and bowls of violets, Iceland poppies and winter flowers. Mrs. Shepherd ' received the guests in a dainty frock of lavender georgette, Miss Jean Shepherd wore lemon taffeta and georgette. About fifty young people were present and the evening was pleasantly spent with dancing and games. *#* » ■ "

An entertainment was given on Saturday, entitled "A House Warming Party," by the Ladies' Committee of the Takapuna-Bayswater Boating Club. The guests of honour were the commodore, flag officers and men's committee. The party was held in the club house, the hall being arranged in cabaret style—part with supper tables (decorated with lemon and orange Iceland poppies), and part reserved for dancing. Mrs. R. Lidgard made an excellent chairwoman. The first two items were dances, a polonaise and a' jazz, for which Mrs. Lawrence, played excellent music. The toasts were: "The King," proposed by Mrs. Deacon; "the Commodore Flag Officers and Men of the Committee," .-by Mrs. R. ; Lidgard; "Honorary Lady Life Members," by Mrs. Edwards; and, "The Press," by Mr. J. Mackay. Responses wer made by Mr J- Mackav (commodore),- Mr. Rambaud, Mr. A" W. Jones and Mr. E. Tucker. Songs were contributed by Mrs J. Williamson, Miss-C-Foster, and the song and chorus, "Clubites,": by the ladies' committee. After , supper, dancing was resumed. Amongst those present were:—Mrs. R. The members of the Auckland Piano Students' Association arranged a very pleasant afternoon last Saturday, when they entertained some. thirty of their friends with bridge and' five ■ hundred. The tables were set out in the foyer of the Lewis Eady Hall. Miss Davies handed in the highest score for the bridge and Miss Eise gained the five hundred prize. A successful surprise party.was held in the home of Mrs. D. Smith, St. Helier's Bay, on Saturday evening last, when the room was tastefully decorated with, many-coloured streamers - .an j balloons.
