RAIN IN THE PROVINCE.
MAIZE CROPS SAVED. HEAVY FALL AT OPOTIKI. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) OrOTJLKI, this day. Heavy soaking rain tell in 1 lie Opotiki district priictically all night. it appears to have been general over a wide area. It will be of great benefit to farmers and others, as practically 110 rain had fallen in the district since Christmas, and the pastures were very •pa relied. The maize crops also had been suffering badly. The rain has fallen just in time to assist the cobbing, which other'wiso would have been a failure.
It is expected that there will be a substantial 'increase in the milk yield as soon as the effects of the rain become felt in the pastures.
WANGANUI SOAKED.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WANO ANUI, Wed 11 e sday. A dry spell unprecedented for thirty years was broken to-day with a , lieavy downpour of rain. The fall commenced shortly after 3 a.m., and enthusiastic gardeners, on arising, found their lawns and plots well soaked. Up to midnight 011 Saturday 110 rajn had fallen since well before Christmas, and as hosing had to be severely restricted city gardens were in a very dry state. ' This morning the rain came down in torrents, continuing at intervals most of tlio day.
DOWNPOUR AT WELLINGTON
(By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. The longest spell of dry weather oxperienced in Wellington for forty years ended, last night with a welcome downpour of rain. It was the first appreciable fall, for just over six weeks.
