AUSTRALIAN CANNED FRUIT.
A paragraph published in Monday s issue quoted a report from the Melbourne "Argus" with reference to the action _of a large manufacturing firm in cutting adrift from the Association of Canners and cutting prices. Representatives of local importers point out that some of the figures quoted by the "Argus" are misleading, but in any case the position with regard to the New Zealand trade cannot be affected, as the export business iaurun under very stringent conditions. Before any person or firm can export canned fruit from Australia he must secure a Government* permit, and this permit must indicate that the prices arranged by agreement with the association are being charged. As a matter of fact the export prices for the new pack have actually been announced; showing peaches (standard) at 8/3 per case f.o.b. Melbourne, compared with 9/ last year, and apricots 8/9, compared with 8/6 last year. It follows, ['therefore, that while "cirtting" may take place in regard to the domestic trade it u not possible where exports are being considered.
