UNRECOGNISED ENERGY.
THE POWER WE USE. If a man realised at the end of the day how much energy he had expended in normal and almost unconscious physical activities he would be thankful'for the chance to sleep. The writer who pushes his pen over the paper for several hours at a stretch would doubtless think so had worked hard if he had excavated •. well in the same time; yet it is beieved fiat the sum of the energy he uses daily in writing vfould be enough easily to dig a well. Typewriting is not hard work, yet let "us see how much energy it takes to. write forty letters on a machine. i;very.time a key is pressed to print a letter a few ounces of force are used, ■. i-i-y time the carriage is returned ,i» begin a new line between one and Mir pounds of force are requisitioned. i-'orty letters, averaging 20 lines each, uiud mean about 20,0001b of force, 1000 ach letters (a very light number for a year) would mean' at least 5,000,0001b.
