HIS MOTHER-IN-LAW.

QUEER JEWISH CASE. i MATRIMONIAL TANGLE. I LONDON. March 19. ; J A case of a remarkable nature is ,\ being heard in the King's Bench Divi- , sion, in which the parties are Jewish. ; Mrs. Davis is suing Bertram Coopman. her son-in-law, for £220—the costs of ' the previous law suits. Evidence was gi r en that defendant became engaged to his wife when she was a seventeen years-old actress. Later, when she expected to become a mother, the defendant, owing to his parents' objections, refused to marry the girl. Mrs. Davis then began an action • against Coopman for the seduction of her daughter, and the girl began an action for breach of promise. r When the actions were nearing hear- , ing (which was a few months after the * child was born). Coopman undertook to ' marry the girl, and to pay £220 for the withdrawal of the law suits. The defendant said that immediately ! after the ceremony his wife refused to. : come and live at his parents' home, and ' had refused to do so ever since, though I he was not able to provide a separate home. He complained that his mother-in-law had taken his wife to an unknown address, and for this he made a counterclaim for damages. Mrs. Davis, giving evidence, said she was prepared to withdraw the action if the young folk were happy. Coopman's- counsel said that though 1 his client only earned £5 a week, if the ' mother-in-law did not interfere Coopman 1 would pay the £220 in instalments. Mrs. Davis: Who will be the judge of 1 my interference? ' Counsel suggested the Rabbi. ' At this stage the hearing was adjourned. WIRELESS PROBLEMS. MARCONI'S NEW MOVE. IRISH STATION FLAN. LONDON, March 14. The erection in the Irish Free State '_ of a wireless station capable of reciprocal coin muni eat ion with Australia is the latest dramatic possibility of the wire- . less deadlock. , I learn that this has been seriously mooted in responsible quarters. It if ; pointed out that the Marconi Company contracted to build the Amalgamated I station in Australia, and a reciprocal station at this end. It is known that the Free State Oovt ernment is most anxious to develop on these lines, particularly in view of tin , fact that the bulk of "the original subi seriptions to the Marconi Company were ; Irish. The Free State is independent of the , British postal administration, and, there fore, outside the British licensing juris , diction. It is believed that the distribu , tion throughout Britain of messages froir the Dominions through Ireland is practicable, >ticable, just as the messages by cables , terminating in Ireland are distributed. I The greatest drawback to the scheme ," and it may prove insuperable, is the fact that political complications wotild arise. Nevertheless the scheme is not th< nnlikeliest of possibilities, even if ill present it is only being canvassed fo] its bargaining powers. It is added that the Free State is now a Dominion. What could be more natura than that it should link up with tin sister Dominions, if the latter were dis satisfied with the British Government plans ; GIANT AIRSHIP. i TRANSATLANTIC FLIGHT. j TESTS IN GERMANY. r 1 LONDON. March Iti. ' The transatlantic voyage of the air ; ship ZR3, constructed by the Zeppelin 1 Compnnv at Friedrichshaven for the United States, has again been postponed. ' Originally the flight was planned for last November, but was subsequently fixed for the end of April. Now it is unlikely to take place, says the Berlin correspondent of "The Times, - ' bgfore the end of May. The reason for the latest postponement is the desire to carry out a series of test flights over Germany to prove the reliability of her five new 12-eylinder Maybach motors of - 400 h.p. each. Previously motors used, r even in war-time Zeppelins did not exI ceed 260 h.p. i With the new higher powered typ p > it is hoped to render the airship, which i is the 160 th built by the Zeppelin f Company, safe and controllable in any i storm iikely to be encountered. It I embodies all the latest constructional improvements. 3 For the Atlantic voyage to America : the airship will be controlled by Herr i Eckeuer. one of the leading Zeppelin j' flight engineers, and the crew will be - mainly German. 3 The* Maybach firm is one of the f biggest engineering concerns in Germany 3 and before the war specialised in tJie manufacture of racing cars. 9
