TASMAN'S UNPLEASANT EXPERIENCE.
RUNS SHORT OF COAL. IN HEAVY GALE. The seven passengers and the crew who arrived from Whakatane by the Tasman last night had an experience en route that they are not anxious to repeat. The vessel left Whakatane at ia.m. on Friday, but encounterce itie £al<\ and consequently ninde but little progress. Late on .Saturday afternoon her coal supplies ran short, and on reaching Tiri at 6 p.m. signalled that =he required coal. Her message was sent on to the Northern Company, and Captain Hammond, assistant manager of the company, was faced with the' problem of finding a crew on a wet Saturday evening. He was finally able to man the Arapawa, and sent her out with a coal cargo for the distressed vessel shortly before midnight. In the meantime, + ,he [Clansman, already long overdue in Auckland from Russell, got into touch with the Clansman, and Hie two vessels stood together all night. A heavy sea wa* running, and the Tasman received a £ood ■iea.l of buffeting, which broke away a number of deck fittings, nnd swept the fore-cabin, also damaging the engineroom. , Finally, in the small hours of Sunday morning, the Arapawa picked hetup and towed her to Kawau, where ehe received a supply of coal. Both vessels finally readied port a'oout 5 p.m.
