Coode .Island (says, the "Melbourne Herald-") is-still proving a sanctuary, and comfortable retreat for nine circus' horses, which form the subject of dispute between the Federal Quarantine Branch and the owner, said to he Mr. Borowski. Ten months ago the horses were landed in Melbourne, the owner declared that he had official permission to bring them here, but fhe quarantine authorities contended that a prroclamation prohibiting the- importation of horses from the Straits Settlements on account of diseases affecting those parts. ■was a bar to entrance to Australia. The horses were landed at the quarantine station to stretch their legs after their long voyage, and they have remained ■undisturbed ever since. The cost of feeding the horses, and looking after them generally, has fallen on the (omjH&nwealth Government, for Mr. W. H. Croker. acting for the owner, lost no time in launching a writ against the Commonwealth for €10.000 damages, and pending the hearine of the action, the Commonwealth could not deal with the animals. It was costing about £4 10/- a week to feed the horses at the start, but since the war borke out, and horse feed went up in price, the weekly bTTI the Commonwealth had to pay leaped abend. It is now estimated that the horses have cost the Commonwealth more flmn £200.
