BATTLE RAGES FOR THREE WEEKS IN THE CHAMPAGNE.
TERRIBLE STRUGGLES IN ENEMY'S TRENCHES.
FRENCH TENACIOUSLY HOLD CAPTURED GROUND.
LONDON, April 6. The "Daily Chronicle" states that a battle has been raging almost continuously in the Champagne during the past three weeks, the French taking the offensive. Fighting was most violent north of Mesnil les Hurlus. Nothing of McsniV" remains but a heap of ruins. A perfect tempest of fire swept the ground for nearly a month. There is not a yard that Tjas not been ploughed by shells. i
Terrible struggles took place in the enemy's trenches. The melee was indescribable. Without room to fire, riflemen fought with unfixed bayonets, pickkaxes, iron bars, and fists. The French tenaciously held the ground taken.
