According to advices trom Italy the Russians are now making the most notable advance yet recorded in the Carpathians. Earlier messages stated that the crest of the Carpathians was held by the Czar's army, and that they were pushing along the roads towards Bartfeld, on the southern side of Hungary's great rampart. The latest report, however, indicates that the Russians have made a rapid and important advance towards the Hungarian plain, and are now in the foothills of the Carpathians. They have taken many prisoners and large quantities of munitions and- equipment. In Northern Poland the Russians also report steady pressure on the German left, which has again retreated slightly. The underwater pirates have been at work again, a trawler and a Cardiff collier being their victims. Only two minutes were given the crew of the collier in which to make their escape. The bi-weekly report issued by Sir John French indicates that matters have been very quiet for the past few days, while stormy weather has affected the work of the Allied airmen. A section of a German advance trench line was exploded. The German casualty lists show that over 1,600,000 men have been killed or wounded since the war began, exclusive of those lost on the high seas. The Bulgarians have offered Servia reparation for the raid on her frontier. The raid was organised by a German agent, and Turks and Austrians were included in the band. Greece is strengthening her frontier forces as a result of the raid in the vicinity of Doiran.
