RIFLE CHAMPIONSHIP.

THE FINAL FIFTY. RESULT OF TEAMS' MATCHES. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) TRENTHAM, Thursday. The last two of the series of matches preceding the King's Prise, which takes place at three o'clock to-morrow, were fired off to-day in weather somewhat similar to that of the previous day, there being short periods of calm and longer periods of spasmodic breeze, which brought abont some remarkable shooting In both matches. While some outsiders, as well as veteran shots, made excellent scoring, several "cracks" entirely failed to keep up to their standard, and a large percentage of cards showed marksmanship below the normal. As is usual when approaching the final stage of these competitions, there were many changes in the positions of the leading competitors. The most peculiar of all was the case of Drummond (Westport), who, when shooting was finished last night, was up among the first ten. He fired to-day in the Hawke'a Bay and Taranakl matches at 900 and 1,000 yards respectively, but failed to find the target with a single one of his 22 shots. Then there was the case of Captain Potter, of Auckland. His shooting finished np last night with a clear lead of 10 points, but could only total 24 and 31, to-day, so that where he had "started to-day's shooting with a clear lead of 10 points, he finished up 10 points behind the leading scorer (James), lv the Hawke's Bay match Frank (Christchurch) put on a possible, bnt could only register 35 in the ensuing match at 1,000 yards. Marengi, with 54 at each range, shot Into second position, and McMurray, shooting consistently. Is now tieing with Loveday, last year's Champion, for third place. The surprise of the 1,000 yards contest was the shooting of Sutherland, the Goodwood tyro, who registered the possible. He scored six points more than any other competitor In the match. Marshall's score of 48 in the Hawke's Bay match was also a meritorious one. In this match Gay (Kaponga) only scored two, and afterwards had fixed his sight for 800 yards instead of 00U yards. The Association again reaped a good harvest of challenge half-crowns. So far there have been 440 challenges, resulting in a revenue of £55.
