A CUNNING RUFFIAN.
CYCLE 'AND CATTLE THIEF. (By Teleeraph.—Press Association.) TNVEROARGILL, this day. At the Supreme Court, William John Richards, 44, charged "with stealing a bicycle at Wainawa, a mob of cows at Edendale, and a mob of steers at Clinton, was. sentenced to one year on each charge concurrently and detention for reformatory treatment for a period not exceeding five years. Prisoner arrived from England a year ago, deserted a wife and two children, and had 'been going under aliases. The Crown Prosecutor stated that he' had £530 in the Bank of New -Zealand and £87 in the Post Office Savings Bank. When arrested he posseased°.a loaded revolver,, which he said he intended using if interfered' with. The- police described "hlin as" a- r cunnmg ruffian.
