SWIMMING.

The opening of the swimming season in Auckland on Monday last was not particularly enthusiastic. This was due no doubt to the meeting being held on a holiday night. The races were fairly well contested. The Northern Club, however, are to be congratulated on making so early a start this season. Claude Corbett, who competed in most of the New South Wales swimming championships last season, will not race again for some time- He has just got over what might have been a evry serious illness. East Sydney possesses a very speedy swimmer in A. Wickham, who holds the world's record for 50yds. In tbe club's 100 yd handicap, recently, he lowered the club's best time for the distance from 60 l-ssec, recorded by Fred Lane, to 59 3-ssec. He completed, the first 50yds in 25sec, 3-5 of a second better than his world's record time.

The dates of the Australasian Swimming Championship carnival, to be held next year at Sydney, have been altered to March 12, 16, and 19. Fort-street Public School, which had been allotted March 12 for its annual carnival, will now hold its gathering a week earlier.

The Auckland Club's gala will be held in the Albert-street Baths on Friday evening, November 27. Entries will be received up to the 18th inst. The programme consists of nine events, including kwo school championships.
