MATCH AGAINST VICTORIA,

The weather was tine and the wicket excellent for the opening of the match between the Englishmen and the Victorian eleven. The attendance wns fair. Arnold, Braund, aud Lllley stand out of the Engish teum. Layer won the toss, and the Louie team, going to the wickets, wete early in trouble, but luckily it was found that there was a sting in its tail. The first wicket fell for nil, McAlister, who opened Willi Bruce, playing Hirst's first ball on. Bruce then went with the total at 10, and Trott and Armstrong carried tbe total to 33, but the scoring was very slow, the first •JO runs taking -15 minutes. Trott was next (smartly stumped off Rhodes, and Ellis had to be content with a single. Layer polned Armstrong, and a good stand resulted, the partnership, by steady play, raising the score to 81 before Rhodes found Armstrong's timbers. Horan arrived only to see Layer clean bowled by Fielder, while Tuckwell made a short stay, and Collins a still shorter one, the last three wickets adding only three runs—eight for 84. The stand of the day was made by ITorau and Monfries. Both got well net, nnd handled the howling confidently, displaying excellent form. Rhodes took the bowling honours, his live wickets costing only 20, and Fielder also proved very effective. The fielding was good, and an improvement on that in the match at Adelaide.
