THE ENGLISH CRICKET TEAM.
(Received 0.7.)
MELBOURNE, this day.
Major Wardill states that a distinct agreement was made with the M.C.C. that all matches, both against the States and the test matches, should be played out to a finish. Warner and Hill were unaware of this when the South Australian match was played, but it would be acted on in all important matches in the future.
Before commenclnj-; the match the captains agreed that either should have tbe right to close his innings after lunch on the second day. Rhodes' performance shows that he does not require, as is generally supposed, a damaged wicket in order to be thoroughly effective. On a typical Australian pitch, which was both fast and true, he obtained five wickets at a cost of 26 runs.
