BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The fortnightly meeting of the Auckland Education Board was hold to-day at the board's offices, when there were present Messrs R. Hobbs (chairman), S. Luke, Grcenslade, Edgecumbe and Harris.

Chairman's Report.—The chairman's report stated that the resignation of Miss L. M. Kelly, assistant mistress, Russell, had been received. Temporary arrangements had been made as follows:—Mr W. Collins, relieving teacher, to Devonport school: Mr F. D. Woods, relieving teacher, to Turua school; Mr R. C. Dyer, to Puhoi school; Miss Y. M. Cooke, relieving teacher, to Lucas' Creek school; Miss j. E. B. Stevenson, relieving teacher, to Tamaki West..

Teachers' Selection Committed.—This committee recommended that the following appointments should be authorised by the board:—Mr F. 11. Smith to be teacher of Red Hill school; Miss A. (J. !Moodie lo be first lady assistant Waiokaraka school; Miss N. Warren, assistant teacher to Waiokaraka school; Miss Eva Bower reinstated as second assistant Ellerslie school; .Miss W. T. iVLetge, assistant teacher to Remuera school; Miss G. B. Holder assistant teacher to Richmond-road school; Miss R. B. Jones assistant teacher to Hamilton West District High School; Miss F. I. Patterson. M.A., assistant teacher to Onehunga District High School; Miss A. 11. Angove substitute assistant teacher to Devonport school; Mr E. R. Long, pupil teacher, from Newton East to Whangarei school; Miss A. B. A. Peglcr, pupil teacher, to Newton East school; Miss G. E. Ross, pupil teacher, to Onehunga District High School; Miss M. I. May, pupil teacher, to Newmarket school; Miss I. D. F. Nicholson, pupil teacher, to Xortheote school; Miss 10. F. Bull, pupil teacher, to Mount Eden school. The committee had examined the twenty-one applications received in answer to advertisement for the headmastcrship of the Ruhoi school, and recommend that the names and qualifications of the undernamed candidates should be submitted to the District School Committee for their consideration:—Messrs W. H. Nicholson, G. Barber. J. B. Ramsay, H. J. Durham, and W. Chappell. The committee, had examined the fourteen applications received in answer to advertisement for the position of mistress of the Te Aroha school, and recommend thai the .names and qualifications of tho undernamed candidates should be submitted to the District School. Committee for their consideration:—Misses M. E. Roberts, .1. Ray, and Mrs J. M. Finlayson. The committee recommended that applications should be invited by advertisement for the position of mistress of the Wellesley-street school, to become vacant at the end of the year. The committee recommended that the -avd's approval of teachers for "aided" or "household" schools should be made subject to the inspector's examination of the qualifications of the persons nominated for the same. The report was adopted. Finance Committee.—The Finance Committee, recommended payment of the following 'accounts:—Maintenance account. JilUh 18/: building fund. £3fiS 18/;); manual and technical instruction, £770 3/5. Tlie report was adopted. Modification of Salaries. —The Education Department notified that modifications of teachers' salaries would cease at the end of the year. Septic Tanks.—The Coromandel Hospital Board wrote asking for 'nformation re septic tanks, and it was decided to forward the Board's architects' report, on the subject to the Hospital Board; New Schools.—An application for a" new school at Mania was referred to the inspector for a report. The Devonport School Committee wrote stating that, they did not consider that there was at present any occasion for a school at Stanley Point, which was a.sked for at a recent meeting of the Hoard by certain residents. The Board decided lo endorse the committee's views. Additions. —Applications for additions to the Cambridge, and Hamilton West schools were referred to the. Education Department.
