At the meeting of the Auckland Education Board this morning the following letter was received from Mr James Muir: "The Chairman Board of IMucation. Auckland. Sir,—ll ore with receive my resignation as a member of the Auckland Board of Education. I tako this step ;•.* a protest against the Hoard's extravagant building expenditure, and the unwortbv tactics adopted by certain members of the Board ai the recent election of Board members." The chairman (Mr. R. Ilob'ys) said: 't am sure thai the members present, will agree with me that it is a matter for regret that Mr. Muir should deem it necessary to sever his connection with the Board. As to bis protest against extravagant expenditure on buildings and against unworthy tactics on the part of members of the Board, 1 tbinkwe may safely leave the public to judge." Mi. Edgccumbc referred to Mr. Muir's protest, against, the Board's extravagant building expenditure." and said this was a, mistake. He rather thought that the Board had not spent enough in buildings. The letter was received. Mr. Harris asked if it were not usual for the Board to pass a vote of thanks for past services to a retiring member. He was quite sure that anything Mr. Muir had done was done with the intention of advancing education in the Auckland district. He was sure that no member of the Board could say that Mr. Muir had not taken a great deal of work upon himself. The chairman said he had carefully avoided replying to the statements made by Mr. Muir, although a good deal might be said about them. Mr. Muir had resigned, and was absent, and under the circumstances he (the chairman I did not care to discuss the subject. Mr. Harris then moved that Mr. Muir be'lhanked for his services to the Board. The Chairman: "I have no personal feeling, and 1 leave the matter in the hands' of the Board." Mr. Luke'seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously.
