SEVEN HOURS' FIGHTING

HONGKONG, July 10. Chinese on the Gth inst. attacked
Tientsin
They were in great force, and had twelve guns, with which they poured into the to\vn"a deadly fire. 1 The combined foreign force defending Tientsin responded gallantly, and eventually succeeded in defeating the enemy.
The engagement lasted seven hours.
The Allies had thirty casualties, and the Chinese a much larger number.
The Chinese troops took cover from the fire 7 of the allied forces, and fought their guns admirably, but they were eventually compelled to withdraw.
Twelve-pounder quick-firing guns from the British battleship Terrible were of great assistance in enabling the allied forces to repel the attack. A Russian force, with the help of a Gatling gun, desperately defended a bridge near the French settle-
