THE STEAMER MATATUA.
FIRE ON BOARD
CARGO PARTLY DAMAGED,
LONDON, July 10. Owing to a defect in the insulating plant a fire occurred among the steamer Matatua's cargo at Monte Vidio. 2300 carcases were discharged, and were unlit, for reshipment.
WELLINGTON, this day. The Matatua left Monte Video for London on Monday evening. A private cable was received from Monte Video stating that a. fire occurred in No. 1 hold of the s.s. Matatua, which left Wellington on June 9 for London.
It is unlikely the Matatua lias any cargo on board from Auckland.
