MR LEONARD MARSHALL'S STUD.

A STROLL ROUND THE PADDOCKS

On Saturday last I availed myself of an invitation to see the St. Simon stallion Cyreuinn and the brood inures the property of the English gentleman, Mr Leonard Marshall, which are located at Harp Road, Ellerslie. Mr J. I!. Williamson, who manages Mr Marshall's stud and racing affairs, was in readiness to nie'et

ns, jiikl :in interesting stroll among1 the ninny highly bred mares in the richly grassed paddocks at the loot of One Tree Hill followed.

Silk, a highly bred marc, by Grandmaster from Chrysophrase, by "Knpid Bay from Chrysolite—the dam of Robinson Crusoe and Onyx—was the first we looked over. She was bred by the Hon. ,1. Kales, and was foaled in ISBB. With plenty of size, quality, and substance, she is one of the pets of the paddock. She is in foal 10 Cyrenian. Another beautiful mare is Windmill, chestnut in colour, who was bred by Mr Frank Reynolds in 1886. She stands over 16 hands high, and she is undoubtedly in foal to Cyrenian. Her pedigree is of the best, for she was sired by (loldsbrough from Merry-go-Round by Hamlet from Whirlpool (imp.). After this mare was brought over from Sydney1 she produced a fine colt to Gossoon (imp.). Another highly bred mare browsing in the paddock was Hinemoa, a bright bay by Gang Forward from Primula (imp,) by Merry Hampton from Paigle, by Springfield. She was bred by the late Sir Thos, Elder at Morphetville. Before leaving Sydney the mare was mated with the New Zealand bred Eussley, and also by Cyrenian in Auckland, but it is doubtful if she is in foal. Another occupant of the paddock in the brown mare Irtna, was also bred at Morphetville. She is by Neckergat from Perhaps, by Gang Forward from Peradventure from Manganese, who won ten races as a two-year-old in 1855 and the One Thousand as a three-year-old. Her two daughters by Rataplan (Mandragora and Mineral) left indelible marks on the English records by throwing Kisber, Wenlock, and Apology. Irma is in foal to Cyrenian. She is thickly set with great quarters. I liked immensely a mare named Matakanui, black in colour, whose pedigree is full of the Fisherman blood. She was" foaled in 1895 and is by Churchhill—Ruby 11. by Bras de Fer (imp.), and last season she was mated with Cyrenian to whom she is in foal. Other mares in the paddock also in foal to the English stallion are Welcome, a nicelooking little mare, by The Dauphin from Bangle, by Musket—Locket; Mr P. E. Baldwin's Puwerewere by Nordenfeldt—Pungawerewere (a visitor from Wellington, who looks really well); Asthore, by Orestes—Cushla; Minola, .by Cuirassier—Bianca; and Parera by Cuirassier—Albatross. Both Minola and Parera are a pair of nice-looking mares, both brown in colour. Sybilla, a bay mare by Natator from Beauty Bright, by The Painter, has an unknown foal at foot which she produced at the Easter period. He is lively and well but small. Sybilla is half sister to Shylock and was bought near Wangauui unbroken, where she had the reputation of being a good jumper. Chic, by Howitzer—Fair Lillian, was never raced. She is a half sister to Ditto, and is in foal to Cyrenian.

The ten mares which Mr Williamson brought up from Hawke's Bay owners to be mated with Cyrenian are a fine lot, and for size, substance, and quality they are exceptionally good, especially the three sired by Torpedo. They have settled down in their new quarters, and it is quite evident they have .been well-cared for at home. Fair .Nell, by Apremont —Idalia, the dam of Saracen and Loyalty, carries her years well. She is a plain lengthy mare, and is in foal to Torpedo. She should produce a good one to Cyrenian. Brooklet, by Torpedo— Kivulet (who is a full sister to The Shannon), was mated with Quilt last season, but it is doubtful if she is in foal. She stands over 1G hands high and is all quality. /Egyptilla, by Ingomar —Onyx, is in foal to Quilt. Waingongoro, a black mare by Torpedo—Cascade, by Sledmere—Waterwitch is full of quality, and she should mate well with Cyrenian. She is also in foal to Quilt. Another of the visitors, Primula, is a fine big brown by Torpedo from Primrose by The Mute. Few mares have thrown more winners than Primrose or been so prolific. Since 1883 to 1898 she has .produced nine colts and six fillies. Primrose is carrying her first foal by Jet d'Eau. Tireuse, a daughter of Nordenfeldt and Florence McCarthy, is a gem to look at, and she is known to fame as the dam of Tirailleur, Tiraillerie and Tire. This season she is in foal to Torpedo. Lady Hamilton, by King Cole—My Idea, (a full sister to Nelson) is in foal to Jet d'Eau, while Iphimede, by Nordenfeldt—lphigenia, by Ingomar, is also in foal to the same horse. Sabrina is a low set lengthy mare of all round quality. She is by Vasco de Gama out of Lorelei, by Leolinus —Naiad. She is in foal to Torpedo. It is proposed to mate this mare with Eton. Falconet, by Musket—Lovebird (the dam of-Leopold) is a fine specimen of a brood mare, and all over she has the great power of the family from which she spring. The combination of Cyrenian q&d Falconet should produce something high-class.

Mr Williamson also used Eton for a number of . mares last season. Pit-a-pat, a nice-looking1 mare belonging to the famous Lauriston family, which has turned out Malvolio and Maluma, and who was bought in Sydney last year on behalf of Mr Marshall, is one who visited the harem of the son of Castor and Lady Walmsley, and she is heavy in foal. Pit-a-pat is by Rupert —Footprint, by Robinson Crusoe. Kitty Flynn, by Trident —Aleestis, is in foal to Eton, likewise the bay mare Dodo (a full sister to Ditto), by The Dauphin—Fair Lillian, and an unnamed mare by The Dauphin—Pastime (dam of Mangere). All of these mares were in the paddock, each looking robust and well. Ten months have winged their flight since I last looked over Cyrenian, and it was in August of last year that he was landed here from England. He has grown and thickened out since that period, and one cannot help admiring his fine lines of conformation. He comes from the best running families, and he should gain great favour as a stud horse. Last year fourteen mares visited Cyrenian's harem, and they are all in foal except one. Since Eton Went to the stud he has developed into a good-looking horse.

He stands a little over 16 hands, possesses good bone, grand barrel, and immense quarters, .and a nice bloodlike head. Lady Walmsley, his dam, was an own sister to Carbine, and it would not be surprising to see him turn out some good stock. I saw a couple of his progeny on Saturday. in the shape of a bay colt out of Asthore. and a buy h'lly out of Welcome. 1 loth are nicely balanced juvenile.'-. A brown filly by Cydntis—lrma ;>!so promises well. However, the gnu of the yearlings is ;i chestnut colt named Spalpeen, by Gossoon ■(imp.) from Windmill, He has plenty of size, with good bade and quarters. His head, however, is very plain.

THE KACGIIOESES IN TRAINING.

Mr Wiliamson's boxes are well, tenanted. The first to come under inspection was v full-sister to Eton, rising two years old. She has a speedy look about her, and she should come to hand for early racing. Another rising two-year-old by Cuirassier —Dulce. by Castor, occupied the next box. She is rather low in front, but she has good quarters.

Aminta, a great big raking filly by Castor —Vivandiere, stands fully 16 hands high, and so far is untried. As a two-year-old she grew very fast, and her trainer recognising that she would want time put her on the retired list until some six or seven weeks ago, when she was taken up again. She is fairly forward for the time of year. "J. 8." then introduced a rising four-year-old gelding by Ascot —Romp, an own brother to Norton. Those who remember Norton will at once recognise that the gelding under notice is darker in dolour than his relative, but he has much the same markings. Mr Williamson bought , the gelding from Mr D. Cameron, of Marangi, near Wang-anui. He has not long been handled, and he has lots of condition. In appearance he looks good enough for anything.

lii the next box the jumper Tahaka, by Muskapeer—Ladybird, was located. He was seen out in-two or three racea at the back end of the season, but he ran green, and should improve. The disappointing Cuirassette also forms one of the team, and she is looking big and well. She has been on the retired list, and is about to be taken in hand again. Miss Shirley, by Orestes—Nelson Maid, rising three years, occupied the next apartment. She started in one race last season, but without success.

A nice cut of a mare named Blemish, bay in colour, sired by Foul Shot, and rising five years, was next looked over. She should turn out a useful sort, for she is built on racing lines. Blemish only recently came up from Wanganui. I understand she belongs to a medico in that district.

The next box contained a real aristocrat in the colt by Hotchkiss from Ouida (dam of Strathmore), who was purchased at the last Wellington Parß yearling sale for 250 guineas. He has had the name of "Bobs" bestowed .on him. lie is a fine lengthy juvenile indeed, possessing plenty of size, good bone, grand barrel; and quarters. He looks as if he will require time to get set, but he is full of promise. The colt has been put through his rudimentary facings, having been first handled in March last, and he is daily ridden. The St. Leger—Balista horse D.onneraile looked lusty and well. He is in the sale list, and any one in search of a stallion for a country district could not make a better choice.

Coronet Looks big- and well on his short retirement, and he had the saddle put on him again a week ago. His off hind hock is still slightly swollen, as the result of the mishap he met with in the autumn, while being shipped on the steamer nt Napier, nncl it may interfere with his preparation. During the past season Coronet showed good form under heavy weights. He has contested three Auckland Cups, and had the bad luck to run second to Uhlan and Bluejacket in different years.

In the adjoining box a good-hooking six-year-old mare by Natator—Lucy (dam of Perform, Strike, and Squib) was located. She was bred by Mr J. Currie, of Kai-iwi, bat so far she has not yet raced. She gives promise of making a steeplechaser. The remaining boxes were tenanted by Verdi (who looks well), a rising two-year-old colt by Lord Dunluce —Welcome, and a rising three-year-old gelding by Catesby—Allabacubia, by, St. Leger, recently brought up from the West Coast.
